Day 3: St. Louis to Rolla, MO

Signs along the road
Today's trip started with a pass through St. Louis. Since Route 66 curves through downtown St. Louis anyway, we made a stop at the famous arch - especially since neither my dad or myself had been there. Seeing the arch was pretty impressive - its metal glistering in the sun.

From there on, we spend quite a while driving through the suburbs of St. Louis through various towns. Most of them carried very little history of what the route probably once offered. We saw a couple restaurants here and there but mostly everything has been modernized - from housing to gas stations and stores.

Once we left the city and its suburbs, the countryside road zigzagged very quickly through the hills of Missouri. Most of the towns we drove through were very small and had very little, if any, relics left of back in the day. We saw a couple old motels and restaurants in Gray Summit, Bourbon, and Cuba but the road has definitely lost some of its history in this first leg in Missouri.

Indian Harvest Trading Post

One of the interesting stops we made today was at the easternmost Indian Trade Post. They had some really interesting relics of the Native American culture. The owners we talked to set up shop about 15 years ago and have been trading ever since with Native Americans coming through.

We have been using EZ66 Guide to direct our way from Chicago to L.A. The book dates from 2005 and the directions have been dead on so far but what has also been interesting are the changes. There have been a couple of times now that the book mentions a certain restaurant or motel that we can no longer find or is obviously not in operation anymore. It just shows the ever-changing landscape of businesses that come and go. Just that this time, the ones that go had been in business for quite a while.

    1. The owners of the teepee took that picture. The teepee was big enough for me to stand up in it and that is with it containing a second floor!!! It was pretty hot inside though.
